Manchester City Football Club is an English Premier League football club based in Manchester. Founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), they became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and Manchester City in 1894. The club has played at the City of Manchester Stadium since 2003, having spent most of their existence at Maine Road.

The club's most successful period was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when they won the League Championship, the FA Cup, the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison and with players including Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee.

After losing the 1981 FA Cup Final, the club went through a period of decline culminating in relegation to the third tier of English football in 1997. The club has since regained top flight status where they have spent the majority of their history. In 2011, Manchester City qualified for the Champions League and won the FA Cup.

TEAM NEWS
Champions League - Matchpack: Manchester City v Napoli

Both Manchester City and Napoli are making their debuts in the Champions League group stages.

Manchester City’s only participation in the European Cup was back in the 1968/69 campaign – they were knocked out by Fenerbahce in the first round.

Napoli last took part in the European Cup in the 1990/91 campaign. Their only defeat in six European Cup games came against Real Madrid, back in September 1987.

Napoli have lost their three away trips against English clubs in European competition (against
Burnley in the 1966/67 Fairs Cup, against Leeds Utd in the 1968/69 Fairs Cup and against Liverpool in the 2010/11 Europa League).

Manchester City have lost only two of their 33 home games in all European competition (including qualifiers), losing to fellow English side
Chelsea in the Cup Winners Cup semi-final in April 1971 and against Midtjylland in a UEFA Cup qualifier in 2008.

This will be the first competitive meeting between these two sides.
